    5-0 out of 5 stars Reporter's Take, May 18, 2006
I bought this tape recorder less than a year ago and I am already in the market for another one. First of all, don't believe the product description. This would be terrible for recording lectures. Even if you are right up against your interview subject, if there is other noise in the room you will not pick his voice up clearly.
Recently, interviews have started to be cut off in the middle with the rest of the tape white noise.
And if you are outdoors, if there is a slight breeze, all you will hear is the roar of the wind. (But no voice.)
    Yuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony delivers solid performance and build quality, February 4, 2009
I almost did not buy this product after reading all of the negative reviews but my experience has been that you need to take reviews with a grain of salt.

I have much experience with many recorders over the last decade. I own a high end Olympus L250, Panasonic, and other misc analog recorders. I also own some high end digital recorders. I prefer micro cassette for their ease of use, easy archive, independence from other electronic devices such as a computer! And partly because of nostalgia.

This Sony is better suited for close dictation then for lecture. For lectures you might be disappointed unless your professor talks loud. For classroom use I would recommend either a higher end Olympus digital, the sound quality and sensitivity are incredible on those. An analog unit with an external microphone would be my second choice, this Sony model does not have a microphone jack. I also own the Sony M-670V which has better clarity and more sensitivity. It is better suited for classroom use.

This Sony unit has decent sound quality, there is slight motor noise but this is the case with most affordable recorders. I do not experience any problems with the sound quality as other reviewers have stated.

It was recently exposed that Belkin sales reps were paying people to leave negative reviews on Amazon of competitors products, I wonder if this Sony product has fallen prey to a similar fate? I can't imagine people being so disappointed with this unit!

The features of the unit are decent, I especially like the tape counter, a must have in my opinion. The unit has a nice solid feel, hinged battery compartment, attractive finish and nice compact size. Sensitivity is good, low background noise and an easy to use feature set without a bunch of gimmicks. I'm actually interested in buying another one to have as a backup. I recently bought an Olympus J300 and returned it and got this Sony. Compared to the Sony the J300 seemed flimsy and cheap but it did have an external microphone jack and performance was similar.

I would normally give this unit a four star because it does not have an external microphone jack or fast playback option, I gave it a five star to compensate for all of the ridiculously bad reviews that this unit got. I bought mine at Staples, although I really like Amazon I sometimes found that they seem to get some bad batches of certain products.

Sony designed an attractive, affordable recorder which performs well. I would spend a few dollars more and get the superior Sony M-670v, if you need it, otherwise for close dictation the 570 should work fine.

    4-0 out of 5 stars From a student's viewpoint, April 11, 2007
I actually liked this recorder. I've been using it to record lectures for my AP US history class and its working pretty great. Although, I do agree with the issue of the motor making a buzzing noise, though I can still hear my teacher pretty clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for doctors, October 11, 2008
My boss (doctor) loved this so much he wanted two. Works well for dictation. Great price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unhappy with the recording quality, August 27, 2008
I just purchased this recorder and I am very dissatisfied. After taping something, the noise/static is almost louder than the material that was recorded. Being a Sony product, I thought the quality would have been better. Sorry I purchased it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst recorder I've Ever Owned, April 29, 2009
Bought this three weeks ago. The sound quality is so muffled that it is almost unintelligible. I now have to buy a replacement after using this model for 8 hours or so. Do not buy this Sony "Made in China" product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Digital would be better, January 18, 2009
I bought this recorder as a sort of security device to record sounds made during the night. It would not pick up noises, just voices. May be useful for recording lectures but for anything else I would not recommend this product at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars An "ok" rating, January 3, 2007
I would give this an "ok" rating. Its has and does the basics, but it does not record low volume levels, or quiet background sounds which is very disappointing to me. Also, its made in China, so i expect it to not work soon. When playing back you have to crank up the volume all the way to hear.
Its not really what i wanted.

    2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, July 25, 2007
I agree with everything the previous reviewer stated - with one addition. Mine DID quit after less than a year from the date of purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Gotten it Years Ago!!!, September 29, 2010
I have been using a panasonic that was not giving me the quality and volume that I needed. Teachers all have a different pitch, tone and monotone. This tape recorder works for all the variety of speakers that I am taping in my Bible classes. It is great...should have bought it years ago. The stores do not sell these anymore....so use Amazon!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Microcassette Recorder!, November 4, 2007
The microcassette works well enough in fast speed but has a bit of wow and flutter in low speed for extending your recording time. Cue and review is located in an awkward position for my use. However, although this recorder is pricey, hopefully it will hold up under use. The AC adapter and NIMH battery charger are a very useful included item with voice activation on the tape recorder itself. Recording and playback work well as does fast forward and rewind. Very light in weight and can be carried in a pocket.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sony M-675V Microcassette Voice Recorder, February 8, 2008
I was very disappointed in this item. It claims to be voice activated--I've followed the instructions but I have never had this feature work. When I have recorded a message the playback is very noisy either though there is no background noise when the recording is being made. I would not recommend this item.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!, March 1, 2010
The Sony M675v is the exact same model as the Sony M-670V which you can purchase for 20 dollars less than this but it comes without the battery charger and rechargable batteries. I purchased this thinking it was a higher model than the 670V and I feel sufficiently ripped off and tricked. I had no need for the charger or batteries but thought it was a nice plus with what I thought was a superior corder. Save yourself some headache and get the M-670 if all you need is the recorder. As far as performance. Decent at best. Giving two exact models different product numbers is sneaky and I didn't appreciate it one bit. I paid 50 dollars for this recorder when I could have spent 30 if Sony had not advertised it so confusingly.

    Mad and disappointed.

Edit to this review: 365 USA customer service email does indeed work and it was my clumbsy mistake for that comment. I did get through and got a very timely reply. Although I wish the customer service rep had a magic wand that could time travel me into last week before I purchased this item. He was fairly nice although not really as enthusiastic as I was to burn stuff and pillage.

All in all this is a Sony disappointment as they are the one packaging the M-670 as the M-675 ... There is no model M-675.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Item Received..No Resolution...One Unhappy Customer, February 23, 2009
Buyer beware!!!! I purchased the Sony M-675V in November 2008 and received the package from Amazon's third party seller BestSource Office Supplies rather quickly. I removed the item from the box and read the description on the sealed manufacturer exterior packaging of the recorder and the description stated as that of my order. Unfortunately I waited a little over a month and a half to take the recorder out of the manufacturer sealed package because when I finally did I realized the recorder inside the package was the M-670V and not the M-675V. If I wanted the M-670V I would have purchased it, but I did not!!! Upon realizing my misfortune I immediately contacted the seller and was told he would be contacting the warehouse and getting back to me ASAP, needless to say, a month later and I still haven't received the return call as promised. I called the seller back several times to follow-up and spoke with Joe who told me the same thing as before that they would get back to me and yet no return call. I called Amazon and was told the A-Z guarantee couldn't be granted since the purchase was made over a month ago so I made another call to Amazon and I was told a claim would be filed for a refund since my attempt at resolution with the seller was unsuccessful. It's been 2 weeks now and still no refund, nor status on my problem. I've been an Amazon customer for years and have spent thousands of dollars in purchases so this is very disheartening for me. I will leave another feedback once I've received follow-up on my claim. Hopefully there will be light at the end of this tunnel. Also, my advice to you is when making a purchase reading the exterior of the manufacturer sealed package is just not enough when determining if you've received the correct item. Remove the item from it's original manufacturer packaging before storing it away. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Clunky controls, inconsistent recording, May 27, 2010
Awkward clunky controls make this a poor choice for someone who wants to use the product regularly. The VAS and general recording is also clunky, because it takes two seconds for the first sounds to get recorded. You need to take a deep breath after you push RECORD and then stay the same distance from the microphone, or else you'll get a choppy recording. Worse still, the unit MAY NOT RECORD if the case is not closed in a certain way. It looks like it's recording, but then doesn't record. What is the point of a tape recorder if you can't trust it?

I finally got sick of the thing and bought a Sony M-470. It was a few $ more but well worth it. My favorite all-time recorder was my old Panasonic RN-305, but after 5 years of continuous use, it broke. Luckily, the Sony is almost as good.

    2-0 out of 5 stars so-so recorder, January 17, 2008

3-0 out of 5 stars JWIN JXR16 Does the Job, June 4, 2009
I have fifty or more micro cassettes in a box which contain tons of creative material that I have logged over the years. My old Micro Cassette Recorder no longer qualifies as a Micro Cassette Recorder so I needed a new one so that I could listen and evaluate all the old brain droppings from years past. As it is 2009 I currently have a digital micro recorder whose contents I can dump into my computer, but that's another story. I needed a reasonably priced device which would allow me to listen to all this junk. the JWIN JXR16 was equal to the task. ... Read more
